Policy: Character Types

Post by Faustus »

While Plains of Turia encompasses the entirety of the southern Gorean plains (basically everything south of the Cartius River that isn't the Tahari desert), its roleplay and stories are focused on the Dominion of Turia. This includes the city-state proper, the client-port of Kargash, the surrounding peasant villages, and any other territory Turia is able to impose its will upon. Thus our expectation is that most members will be characters of the 'city Gor' culture featured in most of the novels.

Other types of characters are not forbidden, but as they are not what Plains of Turia is focused on, they do come with some additional expectations. Note that this is something we concern ourselves with for members and applicants (i.e. permanent and long-term residents of Plains of Turia, or people seeking that status); we're less concerned about guests or visitors being of different character types.

We break "other" character types down into three categories:
  • The Wagon People are the other dominant culture of the southern plains, though cultural and historical differences with the people of Turia mean that hostility and violence between these two groups tends to be the norm. Anyone seeking to play a man, woman, or slave of the wagons needs to understand that Turians will not regard them kindly under the best of circumstances, and certainly not in the wake of the Tuchuk Sack. They will not be welcome inside the actual cities of Turia or Kargash, where we expect most of the actual roleplay to take place.
  • Minor, native cultures are peoples or groups who aren't common on the plains, but who are from somewhere in the region. This includes Talunas & jungle tribesmen (as the Schendi jungles form part of the northern border), desert tribesmen (as the Tahari borders the plains to the east), and outlaws who might be found in the wilderness. Playing characters of these types will require some additional conversation before they are accepted.
  • Minor, foreign cultures are peoples or groups who are extremely rare on the plains, hailing from far off regions. These are groups whose presence on the plains would make little sense. Panther girls, Torvaldslanders, Pani, and no-doubt others. Generally speaking, characters of these types will not be accepted.
Our main concern with people playing these alternative character types is our community being fragmented, with significant portions unable to interact with one another as this group is made up of Turians while that group is wagon people. We strongly encourage our members to save these sorts of characters for their secondaries; those wanting to play an alternative character type as their primary should reach out to Room Management to discuss it.

Gender
On the subject of different types and sorts of characters, and what we concern ourselves about in regards to what people want to roleplay as, we want to clarify our stance on the gender of characters and how it relates to the gender of the typist.

We don't care.

We're not interested or intending to ask, or to police the gender of players. Men can play women. Women can play men. Trans men are men, trans women are women. Non-binary people are real and legitimate. And all are welcome here. End of discussion.
